Give Thanks. You May Have 1138 Extra Rights.

11 27

Since today is Thanksgiving, we wanted to remind those who can get married in the United States, that they should give special thanks this year. Why? Well, you have 1138 special rights bestowed upon you.

Gay US citizens, and anyone else who can not marry for that matter, are denied 1138 federal benefits that one can only attain if they legally marry. This is not a made up number, or some BS from a leftist non-profit. This is from the United States General Accounting Office report provided to then Senator Bill Frist in 2004 in response to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The report even admits they may have missed a few, but 1138 is the number they arrived at four years ago. The number may be even higher in 2008.

It is an 18 page report you may read at your leisure, while you digest leftover turkey. The HRC makes a little more clear in layman’s terms, rather than government babble. Things married couples take for granted are inheritance laws, veterans benefits, emergency issues, custodial rights, and even “divorce” laws.

Having to go through an attorney to draw up every document possible to protect yourself in life or death, and not have them protected under the law, is unacceptable. Just remember. A 5 minute drive through in Las Vegas allows people to attain rights that gay people are still fighting for.

Give thanks today if you have those rights. Many more people are just thankful to be here.
