- 1998 The state’s Constitution is amended to say: “To be valid or recognized in This state, a marriage may exist only between one man and one woman.” See Alaska Constitution Article I § 25.
- 1996 Alaska prohibits marriage between same-sex couples by statute. See Alaska Statutes § 25.05.013.

2002 Governor Tony Knowles issues an executive order banning discrimination based on sexual orientation against state employees, see Admin. Order No. 195. However, Alaska does not have a state-wide law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, see Alaska Stat. § 18.80.220.
