It’s been more than a week since Proposition 8 passed in California, banning same sex marriage. Millions have staged massive protests across the country and two were held Saturday at different locations in the Las Vegas Valley.
The backlash since Prop 8 passed in California has been loud and is getting louder by the day as the fight for gay marriage rights escalate. All across the country, members of the gay and lesbian community have been rallying in the streets hoping to win equal rights. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets Saturday with signs and chants.
It started with a rally at City Hall in Las Vegas in the morning and then another rally at the Gay and Lesbian Center in the afternoon. Gay activists say this is the time to make sure their voices are heard on the gay marriage issue because they say California’s ban on same sex marriage could set a precedent affecting the rights of gay couples everywhere.
Danielle Hill is opposed to Prop 8, “We are here to support love that what this is about everybody should have equal rights. Everyone deserves to be in love and marry the person they choose to be with.”
Wes Stanley supports gay marriage, “I disagree with the lifestyle and sexuality but because I protect that piece of paper called The Constitution, I have to allow them to marry.”
Thomas Keeley, an organiser of the City Hall protest said, ”I want to have the same options as every other united states citizen I was born her I pay taxes I should be treated the same.”
Keeley says the passing of Proposition 8 on Nov. 4th really undid hundreds of marriages performed in California since the Supreme Court of California ruled the state’s previous ban on gay marriage unconstitutional.
Metro police officers have been on stand by to make sure these protests don’t get out of control. And so far things have remained peaceful.
